B Cells or B Lymphocytes

B cells or B Lymphocytes are the type of lymphocytes derived from bone marrow stem cells and produce membrane-bound specific antibody when exposed to an antigen. The letter B actually refers to the “Bursa of Fabricus” an organ only present in Birds where B cells were first discovered. B cells mature into an immunologically competent cell under the influence of the bursa of fabricus in the birds and bone marrow in the case of non-avian species (e.g. mammals).
