Interferon (IFNs) are a group of related low molecular weight, regulatory cytokines produced by certain eukaryotic cells in response to a viral infection. Interferons also regulate the growth, differentiation, and functions of various immune system cells. The term interferon has originated from the interference of this molecule on virus replication.
